Xbox Series X HDMI Repair and Black Screen Fix

May 30, 2024Technical Team

Troubleshooting Xbox Series X No Output

The Xbox Series X is a powerhouse, but like all modern electronics, it is vulnerable to HDMI logic failures. If you boot the console, hear the startup chime, but your TV says "No Signal," you have a video output issue.

Diagnosing the Issue

Unlike the PS5 which uses a liquid metal cooled SoC, the Series X uses a more traditional thermal paste application, making teardowns slightly less hazardous. However, fixing a faulty HDMI port requires extreme precision due to the densely packed components near the port on the Series X motherboard.

We see two primary culprits for Xbox video failure:

  1. Physical Damage to the Port: Usually caused by yanking the HDMI cord or the console falling while plugged in. The pins inside get bent or severed.
  2. TDP158 HDMI Retimer IC Failure: The Xbox Series X uses an advanced retimer chip for 4K/120Hz output. Power surges can easily short this chip. When this chip fails, the port looks perfect, but no signal is transmitted.
